~Wintering Your Hives~

                                     How to get your bees to survive the Winter - Sold Out                      $50    

There are a few tricks to getting your bees to make it through the winter, And it all begins in the summer. This class is set up so that you receive emails from mid summer through to the fall, telling you what you need to do every step of the way.  When you come to class you’ll have done everything up to that point, which dramatically increases your chances of winter survival.  In class we’ll review why I made you take those steps, and you’ll learn how to prepare your hives for our winter climate, or whatever climate your raising bees in.  This is a hands on class, and you will be wrapping hives in our yard.  

We’ve had amazing success with over wintering our bees, these amazing tricks will be sure to improve your chances of winter survival.  Only 20 students per session.

Beekeeping in the City: A practical how-to course for beginners with a hands-on field day.


Join Master Beekeepers Lindsay Dault (Owner, Urban Bee Supplies, 10 years experience with 7 years teaching) and Julia Common (Co-founder, Hives for Humanity, 42 years of experience in urban beekeeping and honeybee research) for an innovative, entertaining and highly practical course in beginner beekeeping. Lindsay and Julia, both certified instructors and experienced urban beekeepers, will teach you how to safely and confidently start caring for your own hives - from back yard beekeeping to hobby farm scale (1 - 200 hives). Rooted in a love for bees and the culture of the hive, these instructors offer a fresh approach to beekeeping - it's more than honey!

This course includes 20 hours of instruction time, covering:


  • Basics of the honeybee biology and the hive
  • City bylaws + equipment + livestock
  • Disease management and colony health
  • Honey production
  • Apitherapy and the products of the hive
  • Therapeutic beekeeping
  • Honey harvest and extraction
  • Winter preparation and over wintering
  • Swarm captures
  • Discussion, problem solving and questions

 

All students will also have the opportunity to take part in an apiary field day on May 13, 2017. You will take part in the hands-on inspection of a number of active hives, and conduct a full hive inspection with experienced beekeepers at your side. Observing several hives at once is an excellent way to see a range of hive scenarios and levels of health, providing a fuller understanding of what should be happening in your own colonies, as well as solidifying the theory taught in previous sessions. 

 

This is the only class of its kind and seats are limited to 36 per session.  Certificates given after completion of the whole program.
