These marked queens are sourced from B. Strong Apiaries based near Rocanville, Saskatchewan

B. Strong Apiaries provides the following additional details regarding their breeding program:

"Our breeding program is custom tailored to produce queens that thrive within the parameters of our operation and management strategies. The prairie bee season is short, and the honey window even shorter - we strive for large colonies (doubles) to be at maximum potential by the summer honey flow.

Our breeding program began 12 years ago by comparing all stock already present within the operation. This included a healthy variety of both imported and domestic stocks. We keep firm records on each hive out of the 1,800 production-hive operation - including honey production, colony buildup and queen longevity allowing us to narrow down favorable traits over the last 12 years.

Among others, the traits we breed for specifically are:

·        honey productivity

·        spring buildup

·        swarm reluctance

Due to the harsh Saskatchewan winters, lineages not well suited for wintering naturally disqualify themselves from the breeding program. "
